Europe is home to some of the most competitive and exciting football leagues in the world, with the English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A, and German Bundesliga being the most prominent. 

English Premier League

The English Premier League, or EPL for short, is one of the most-watched football leagues in the world. It comprises 20 teams, with each team playing 38 matches over the course of a season, which runs from August to May. The league's most successful team is Manchester United, with 20 titles to their name. The most successful team in recent years is Manchester City, who has won four out of the last 5 campaigns, but looking back at the last 20 seasons there has been many different teams winning the title, most surprisingly Leicester who won it in the 2015-16 season.

Spanish La Liga

The Spanish La Liga is widely regarded as one of the best football leagues in the world. It is made up of 20 teams, with each team playing 38 matches over the course of a season, which runs from August to May. The league's most successful team is Real Madrid, with 34 titles to their name. For almost 20 years the title has been shared between the three biggest clubs in Spain - Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. The Spanish La Liga also hosts the most famous match in the world, El Clasico, which is the encounter between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

Italian Serie A

The Italian Serie A is the top football league in Italy and is made up of 20 teams. Each team plays 38 matches over the course of a season, which runs from August to May. The league's most successful team is Juventus, with 36 titles to their name. The league saw an impressive run from Juventus winning 9 titles in a row from the 2011-2012 season up to the 2019-2020 season, but in recent years the two Milan clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan won a title each. The biggest game in the italian league is the Derby D’Italia between Juventus and Inter Milan.

German Bundesliga

The German Bundesliga is one of the most competitive football leagues in the world. It is made up of 18 teams, with each team playing 34 matches over the course of a season, which runs from August to May. The league's most successful team is Bayern Munich, with 31 titles to their name. The current champions are Bayern Munich, who has won the title 10 years in a row - a fantastic achievement from probably the most dominant national club in the world.

UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League is an annual football competition that is contested by the top clubs from across Europe. It is the most prestigious club competition in the world, with the winner being crowned the best club team in Europe. The competition runs from September to May, with the final taking place in May. The winner of the Champions League is usually a club from one the top-4 leagues in Europe but three times since its inception in the 1992-1993 season a club from outside Europe’s top-4 has won the competition - Marseille in 1992-1993, Ajax in 1994-1995 and Porto in 2003-2004.

Other European Leagues and Competitions

There are several other top-level football leagues in Europe, including the French Ligue 1, the Portuguese Primeira Liga, the Dutch Eredivisie, and the Scottish Premiership. In addition to these domestic leagues, there are several other European competitions, such as the Europa League, which is the second-tier European club competition, the Conference League, which is the third-tier European club competition, as well as the European Championships, which is a national team competition that takes place every four years.

FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup is the biggest international football competition in the world. It takes place every four years and is contested by the top national teams from around the world. The tournament runs for around a month, with the final taking place in July. The current champions are Argentina, who won the 2022 tournament.
